If you find yourself in Spain, you won’t find it difficult to get a great cup of coffee.
But let’s be realistic, you won’t be hopping on a  plane to go on a coffee tasting tour, it won’t be feasible. That’s why we decided to create a recipe you can try. You’ll be bringing the taste of the Spanish latte to your own home.

What Is A Spanish Latte?

We won’t be able to tell you much about the origin of the Spanish latte because there isn’t much information about that. What we are sure of is that the Spanish latte is an espresso-based drink that is mixed with milk and sometimes, sweetened condensed milk.

It is a lot sweeter than the normal latte you’ve been drinking. But it is not as sweet as the latte that is mixed with flavored syrup (you can try this if you are up for something really sweet. 
This sweeter version is what people call Vietnamese coffee. The taste is almost the same as that of the Spanish latte. 

By now, you should have guessed right by the coffee’s name that it originated from Spain. This delicious beverage is not popular for the Spaniards, as they enjoy it for breakfast, it is now very popular in different coffee shops in Florida, Saudi Arabia, and even some parts of Australia. If you give this creamy recipe a try, it could become your new favorite coffee at home. 

Is The Spanish Latte the Same As Café Con Leche?

This drink is just like lattes from different areas like France or Italy. The Spanish latte is made when espresso or regular coffee is mixed with scalded milk. The Spanish latte is similar to the café con leche but it has more milk. As we previously mentioned, the drink is popular in different countries at the moment, they’re even creating multiple versions of the Spanish latte. Is The Spanish Latte Different From The Normal Latte?

The Spanish latte can be enjoyed with other foods. It is different from the other latte recipes because it is made by combining espresso or really strong coffee with scalded milk.  The other lattes are made with steamed milk or a lot of foamed milk. The Spanish latte will taste sweeter than other espresso milk drinks because sugar is added to it. 

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE THE SPANISH LATTE?

Before we answer some other questions and dive into the recipes, you’ll need to know all the equipment and ingredients needed to make the Spanish latte. We will go over every ingredient in detail. 

Water

We know that this might seem like the most obvious ingredient but the kind of water you use affects the taste of your espresso. That means great-tasting water produces great-tasting espresso. What you have at home is tap water, it contains minerals that won’t come out right in your coffee.

In other words, the tap water may have a taste that can affect your brew. It is better to use filtered water or bottled water for your strong coffee or espresso. Ensure that you are not using distilled water, it is very pure for different purposes, but it contains chemicals that can affect the taste of your coffee. You can also go for Third-wave water to make your brewing process a lot simpler. 

Espresso

You’ll need to brew espresso with fresh coffee beans, you are also going to need a  good espresso machine. Or you can use equipment like a Moka pot to make an espresso-style coffee. If you are using a Moka Pot to brew, fill the bottom chamber with cold water, then grind your coffee beans and put it in the lower chamber, add water and close it.

Put the Moka pot on your stove until the brewed coffee starts rising to the top chamber. When you hear a gushing sound (when the air starts rushing out), it’s time to remove the coffee from the heat. Remember, you shouldn’t wait for too long to remove the coffee from heat, so it doesn’t burn.

A Moka pot can produce strong coffee that makes a large cup of Spanish latte or two small cups. 
If you don’t own an espresso machine or a Moka pot, you can use normal coffee. An Aeropress can brew excellent normal coffee for this recipe. It is better to use high-quality coffee beans  that are dark roasted or medium roasted. 

Milk

Spaniards prefer to use whole milk for their lattes, but you can go 2% milk. If you can’t take whole milk, you can even go dairy-free. You can also use plant-based milk- Soy Milk or Almond milk. 
The next thing to do is to heat your milk. You can heat the milk in a microwave or on the stove. 

Another way to heat your milk properly is to use a coffee brewer that comes with a nozzle for steaming. The point you shouldn’t miss here is that the milk has to be scalded and not boiled. You can also froth your milk and give it another texture. Frothing milk for this recipe is optional.

Simple Spanish Latte Recipe

It’s time to make a Spanish latte in the comfort of your home. For this recipe, we’ll be using:

  • Moka pot 
  • A Milk frother
  • I tablespoon of freshly roasted espresso beans
  • 1-2 tablespoons of sugar 
  • ⅔ cup of milk

This recipe will produce 3 cups from the Moka pot. If you want to make 6 cups, you’ll need to double the ingredients. 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ESPRESSO

  • Fill your espresso pot with filtered water, it should be just below the valve.
  • Put a filter inside the pot and add one tablespoon of ground coffee to the top chamber.
  • Close the chambers and put them on your stove.
  • Use medium heat for the espresso, it should brew for about 6 to 10 minutes. When the espresso has moved through the filter to the top chamber, remove it from heat. 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MILK AND SUGAR

  • As your espresso is brewing, put sugar into the 3 cups.
  • Pour the milk into a cup and microwave it for 90 seconds to 1 minute. 

COMBINE THE MIXTURE

  • When you have brewed the espresso, it’s time to pour it into the latte cups and allow it to dissolve, then give the mixture a quick stir. 
  • Scald the milk slowly to avoid burning it. The milk doesn’t have to boil before you get this recipe right. Or you can froth the milk until it has doubled, then pour it into the coffee mixture.
  • Stir the mixture properly and serve hot.

What Does The Spanish Latte Taste Like?

The Spanish latte has a creamy texture and sweet taste. Because of the addition of sugar, the Spanish latte is sweeter than the regular latte. Most coffee drinkers prefer to use frothed milk for this recipe. This means that the size of the milk will increase, so the coffee will be less concentrated.

How Many Calories Does A Spanish Latte Have?

The amount of calories contained in your Spanish latte depends on the kind of milk you use and the sweeteners. A normal Spanish latte with no extra flavorings and made with scalded whole milk has about 140 calories.

Havana Latte vs. Spanish Latte

A Havana latte is also known as a Cuban latte, the havana latte and Spanish latte are almost the same. The only difference between both is the type of milk used. For Havana latte, regular whole milk is used, but there is also an addition of condensed milk. Condensed milk refers to dairy milk in which 60% of the water has been removed. If they add sugar to it, the product will then be known as Sweetened condensed milk. The condensed milk can last for years if it is still canned and unopened. What this means is that condensed milk is not added to the Spanish latte.

To make a Havana latte, add sweetened condensed milk into your mug, brew your coffee, then pour it directly into the milk and stir. 

Let’s get to the Iced Spanish Latte Recipe

If you want to enjoy your Spanish latte in the spring or summer months, you can. You’ll use the same ingredients for the normal Spanish latte. But you’ll have to alter the recipe a bit. Here, there will be no need to heat the milk since you are pouring it over ice.

Put ice cubes into a glass, then add your brewed coffee to it (brew the coffee and allow it to cool in the refrigerator). Then add sugar or sweetened condensed milk to it, and you can enjoy your drink.
